Tip of the month

    Collar Safety

For training and walking most dogs, half check collars (material collar joined by a small piece of chain which the lead is attached to) are ideal.

The collar works in the following way:

Advanced Obedience

My advanced obedience class is for those who would like to continue with training beyond a basic level. While some class members enjoy competing in local competitions, others simply come along for the fun of it and for the opportunity of spending some quality time with their dogs.

Exercises taught in this class are:

1. Retrieve

2. Distance control

3. Scent discrimination

4. Out of sight stays

5. Off-leash heel work

6. Advanced positions

7. Send-away

To add interest to the class, dogs at this level also get to participate in some fun agility. This is always very enjoyable for dogs and owners and makes for a good break from the more “serious” obedience work!

Dogs are also introduced to Rally Obedience, a new and more relaxed type of obedience sport where dogs and owners have to complete a set course with signs indicating exercises to be done at various markers. This is great fun when performed as a relay race.

The advanced class is always a great way for me to end the morning: I am reminded of what I am aiming for in the lower classes and remember the days when even these brilliant dogs were not quite so well-behaved! The advanced class is also a wonderful place to meet other committed “dog-nuts” and to swap stories about your furry family members!

Class fees are R100 per month.
